    About Comprehensive CBC Test

A complete blood count, also termed as CBC, refers to a blood test that is used to measure various components of the blood, including red blood cells, white blood cells, platelets, haemoglobin, haematocrit, and mean corpuscular volume. The test is performed to check for conditions such as anaemia, infections, inflammation, bleeding disorders, and cancers. The CBC test provides important information about the body's ability to transport oxygen and fight off infections. The test results are analysed along with a patient's medical history and symptoms to diagnose and monitor various conditions.

Which tests are included in CBC?

A CBC test is a simple, non-invasive test and is often a part of routine health check-ups.

The following tests are included in a CBC work:

    1. Haemoglobin (Hb) :

is the amount of the protein that carries oxygen in red blood cells.

    2. Haematocrit (Hct) :

is the ratio of red blood cells to the total blood volume.

    3. Red blood cell (RBC) count :

is the number of RBCs is measured in a blood sample.

    4. Mean corpuscular volume or MCV :

is the average size of RBCs.

    5. Mean corpuscular haemoglobin o MCH :

is the average amount of haemoglobin in a red blood cell is measured.

    6. Mean corpuscular haemoglobin concentration or MCHC :

is the concentration of haemoglobin in a red blood cell is measured.

    7. White blood cell (WBC) count :

is the number of white blood cells in a blood sample.

    8. Platelet count:

is the number of platelets in a sample of blood.

    9. Differential WBC count :

is the different types of white blood cells and their proportions in a blood sample.

In conclusion, a CBC is a simple and routine test that provides important information about the components of your blood. It is often ordered as a part of regular health check-ups or to diagnose and monitor medical conditions.

    Significance of CBC Test

Common blood count tests, such as CBC, help assess a person's overall health by measuring the number and types of cells in the blood. This test can be utilised to detect anaemia, infections, inflammation, bleeding disorders, and certain cancers. CBC tests are employed to measure red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets, which provide important information about the body's oxygen supply, immune system, and ability to form clots. Abnormal results can help diagnose underlying health conditions and guide doctors to make accurate treatment decisions. Regular blood count tests can also be done to monitor the effectiveness of treatment and detect changes in health over time.

When is a CBC test prescribed?

A CBC test is a routine blood test used to assess the overall health of a person. It includes the analysis of various components of blood including red blood cells, white blood cells, haemoglobin, haematocrit, and platelets. A CBC test is typically prescribed to:

    • Monitor treatment progress and response in patients with anaemia, leukaemia, or other blood disorders.
    • Evaluate symptoms such as fatigue, weakness, or unexplained weight loss.
    • Screen for infections, inflammation, or other conditions that can affect blood cells.
    • Check for side effects of certain medications on blood cells.
    • Assess overall health and wellness before a surgery or other medical procedure.

The test is quick, non-invasive and can provide important information about a person's health status.

How is the blood sample collected for CBC test?

A tourniquet is securely fastened to the upper arm before drawing blood. The patient is instructed to create a fist. As a result, it becomes easy to collect blood since more blood fills the veins. Before placing the syringe in the vein, the skin is cleansed to avoid the entry of microorganisms into the body. The blood specimen is then collected in sterile tubes once the needle has been placed into the arm vein.

    Preparation for the CBC test

It is advised to fast for 8–12 hours prior to the CBC test. Avoid alcohol, caffeine, and heavy exercise before the test. Wear comfortable clothing with easy access to arm for drawing blood.
