Why do you need a Bone Density Test?
A bone density test is required especially for women over the age of 65 years because they are at a higher risk of losing their bone density. Due to this, they are more prone to bone fractures. Some other reasons for which you may need to undergo a bone density test are if you are a man over 70 years of age, or if you have very low body weight. Besides, those who have suffered frequent fractures after turning 50 years of age must check their bone density through a BMD Test. Moreover, if you have a family history of osteoporosis, you must get a bone density scan to check the bone density of your bones.
There is as such no major preparation done for a bone density scan. All one needs to do is stop the intake of any calcium supplements at least 24 hours before this test. Try wearing comfortable clothes when going for this test and avoid metal fasteners and zippers, because they might hamper the scanning.
The bone density test is done by lying on your back on an X-ray table. A particular area of your body is then scanned using X-ray radiations at a particular frequency. Then, a scanning machine will pass over your hip and lower spine area, while a photo generator will simultaneously pass beneath you. After this, the images collected by the two scanning machines are transferred to a computer. An expert then examines the images and gives the results with the help of the machines.
The result of a bone density test is often measured in terms of a T score. This T score is nothing but a comparison between your bone density and the bone density of a 30-year-old healthy person.
Interpretations of the BMD Test Results
T Score between -1.0 and Higher
This is a normal test reading for a bone density test.
T Score between -1.0 and -2.5
This result means you are suffering from osteopenia and have a low bone density. You may soon also develop osteoporosis.
T Score -2.5 or less
This is a clear indication that you are suffering from osteoporosis and need treatment for your weak bones.
Risk Factors Involved
Conducting a bone density test is completely safe as it is done using very low radiation frequency. However, it is still not recommended for pregnant women because even those low levels of radiation may harm the unborn child.
