Home Remedies for Bleeding Gums: Overview & Remedies for Bleeding Gums Treatment at Home

Like every day, you are standing in front of your mirror, brushing or flossing your teeth. You notice your gums are bleeding. This is a common indication of a gum disease; it can also be hinting to an underlying health problem like periodontitis (advanced gum disease), vitamin deficiency, lack of platelets, or even leukaemia (Blood cancer). You should not shrug off gum bleeding.

Home Remedies you can try for Bleeding Gums

Here is a list of remedies that you can try to treat bleeding gums at your home:

  • Maintain a good oral hygiene routine

Poor oral hygiene is a leading cause of bleeding gums and other oral diseases. Plaque builds up along your gum line. Plaque is a sticky layer of bacteria. Typically, when you do not properly brush and floss your teeth, the plaque continues to be built on your gum line. As the Plaque spreads to rest of your gum and teeth, it causes the development of gum diseases and tooth decay. You must practice a good oral hygiene routine. You should brush your teeth twice and floss them once a day.

  • Hydrogen peroxide rinse

Hydrogen peroxide is commonly used as a disinfectant. You can use it to remove plaque, treat bleeding gums, and promote better gum health. It also helps with teeth whitening. Once you have brushed your teeth, rinse your mouth with hydrogen peroxide. Do not swallow this solution.

  • Saltwater rinse

Saltwater rinse is one of the most popular natural remedies for bleeding gums. Salt is a natural disinfectant; this helps clear out the built-up plaque. Furthermore, given its healing abilities, it can soothe inflamed gums. It also helps relieve bad breath. You just need a cup of warm water mixed with half a teaspoon of salt. Swish the saltwater in your mouth for at least 15–30 minutes daily.

  • Increase your vitamin C and vitamin K intake

Vitamin C deficiency can be a probable cause of bleeding gums, despite following good oral hygiene. You should increase your vitamin C intake. Vitamin C boosts your immune system. This helps your body to fight back gum infections that can result in gum bleeding.
Vitamin C is also a powerful antioxidant that strengthens connective tissues and protects the inner lining of your gums. This promotes overall improved gum health. Your Vitamin C daily intake should be at least 65 to 90 milligrams. Add fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C to your diet. You can also consult your doctor about taking vitamin C supplements.
Moreover, you should increase your vitamin K intake. It helps with blood clots, another common cause of bleeding gums.

  • Chew cloves

Chewing one or two cloves is another bleeding gums treatment you can try at home. You will initially experience a burning sensation as you chew cloves, but you need not worry. The method will give you some relief from gum inflammation. You can also try directly rubbing cloves or clove oil to treat your gums. It will help in reducing gum inflammation and, subsequently, gum bleeding.

  • Apply aloe vera

Applying aloe vera is an age-old natural treatment method for various conditions, and bleeding gums are no exception. Applying aloe vera to your gums helps reduce inflammation. Take some aloe vera pulp and massage in on your gums. Let the pulp settle in your mouth for a few minutes, then rinse.

  • Oil pulling

Oil pulling is a great treatment for bleeding gums. Swishing oil in your mouth for a few minutes helps fight gum inflammation. This reduces your gum swelling and bleeding. It also clears your mouth of bacteria. You can use coconut or sesame oil.

  • Try cold compress

If bleeding gums have resulted from an injury, you should try applying a cold compress. It will help reduce gum swelling and restrict the blood flow that stops bleeding. You must apply a cold compress several times a day, primarily when the injury is recent. Apply cold compress in a cycle of 20 minutes on and 20 minutes off.

  • Give up on smoking

Smoking makes you vulnerable to numerous health complications. Lung cancer, heart attack and diseases, and strokes are major complications you can face due to smoking. It also impacts your oral health. It is a common reason for bleeding gums and bad breath. The same goes for any other type of tabaco you consume. You should give up smoking and all other kinds of Tabaco to live a healthy and happy life.

Seeking medical consultation

If bleeding persists, aggravates, or you experience some other unexplained symptoms even after adopting the above-mentioned home remedies for bleeding gums, you should consult a dentist. Inform the dentist about your bleeding condition and the remedies you have tried so far. The dentist will examine you, recommend taking some tests, and suggest a suitable treatment course.
